Paul Christie, Geelong Golf Club’s Venue Manager and PGA Professional, has taken centre stage to deliver a career session tailored to the world of golf for students and teachers at Nelson Park School.

With over 30 years of experience in the golf industry, Paul held the attention of 60 students and eight teachers, sharing the hot career pathways for the next generation of golfers, including sports management, golf instructor, groundskeeper, pro shop team member and junior golf coordinator to name a few.

“Golf is more than just hitting a ball and playing for prize money,” said Paul. “With so many pathways into the industry, young adults have far greater opportunities than what was on offer when I started out.”

Paul’s expertise and passion further cemented his commitment to fostering the next generation of golfers and leaders in the industry.

With humour and kindness, Paul’s presentation connected with students of all backgrounds and learning abilities. By sharing the various career paths within golf, Paul enabled students to dream of a future in the sport beyond the traditional player roles.

“As the session unfolded, you could see the faces of the students change when they discovered a career in golf isn’t just about being a golfer,” continued Paul.

“Being a PGA Professional is my favourite role, but the students also explored their passions, such as organising events, personal fitness, working outdoors in gardens, and analysis. They discovered various career opportunities in golf, including roles as a tournament coordinator, elite fitness coach, groundskeeper, media analyst, or junior golf coordinator. Additionally, skills like working with children and people with disabilities can open doors to diverse career paths within the golf industry.” Paul said.

Emphasising the inclusivity of golf, where everyone is welcome regardless of gender, age or ability, Paul’s presentation highlighted the many possibilities within the golf industry.

The session ended with a hit on the practice range, where first timers experienced driving a ball into the distance. The time on the range allowed students to speak with Paul, Storm Ord and PGA Associate Jack Larkin to learn more about the golf industry and where their talents and passions may take them.
